An alternator charges around 14v so as to be able to overcome the battery voltage and deliver a charging voltage. Any higher than this will overheat the cells and boil out the water. The electrolyte (electricity conducting fluid) as used in wet cells is usually made up of 33% sulfuric acid and 66% distilled water.
